One of the most common questions I get from moms before their session is: “What should I wear?” And I get it! These photos are meaningful. They’re not just snapshots; they’re heirlooms. When you look back at them years from now, you want to feel timeless, beautiful, and you.

As your photographer, I’m here to guide you every step of the way — including what to wear to create effortlessly beautiful images that will never go out of style.

Whether we’re in my Fairhope, AL studio or out in nature with your babies in your arms, here’s my tried and true guide for what to wear for your motherhood session.

The Golden Rule: Long, Flowy, and Light

The foundation of a timeless look starts with a long, flowy dress in light neutrals or soft colors like ivory, beige, blush, dusty blue, or sage. These tones photograph beautifully, flatter every skin tone, and allow the emotion in your images to take center stage.

Flowy fabric adds soft movement and elegance — perfect for capturing the gentle, nurturing essence of motherhood.

Styling Tips for a Seamless Look

  • Coordinate, Don’t Match: If your little one is joining the session, dress them in soft textures and neutral tones that complement your dress. Think muslin rompers, linen overalls, or simple knits.
  • Keep it Simple: Avoid bold prints, logos, or dark colors that might distract from the connection between you and your child.
  • Not Too Many Patterns: To avoid visual overwhelm, I typically recommend 1 pattern for every 4-5 solids. So for instance, a patterned dress for Mom, a solid shirt and solid pants for Dad, a solid undershirt with a pattern dress and solid bow for Big Sis, and a solid romper for Baby. I like to start with the patterns and then build the rest of the wardrobe around that, pulling out colors within the pattern.
  • Barefoot is Always an Option: Especially for studio or beach sessions, going barefoot adds a natural, earthy feel.
