Meet the Heart Behind Oh Baby: A Local Business Spotlight
Recently I had the pleasure of chatting with the incredible woman, Lacey Singley, behind Oh Baby, a boutique ultrasound studio in Saraland, AL. Her passion for sonography, paired with a desire to create a meaningful and flexible life for her family, led her to open the doors to something truly special. Here’s a closer look at her journey and the offerings at this local shop! To view their official website, shop their boutique, and set an appointment, visit them here.
Boutique Imaging
Anytime I have a maternity or announcement session, I immediately sing the praises of Oh Baby Prenatal Imaging in Saraland, AL. When I was pregnant, I visited Lacey no less than 10 times to check on baby Amelia. She did such an incredible job of capturing her features for us. Anytime we got an ultrasound from the doctor's office, they did what they needed to for the medical side of it and rarely showed anything of the "fun" things we wanted to see. That's where Lacey came in for us! She has so many tricks and tips to get baby moving we would always get so tickled to see her pushing the wand away. We always left with a strip of ultrasounds from head to toe!
Opening a business wasn’t always part of Lacey's plan. In fact, she admits she used to frown upon non-diagnostic ultrasound studios. But during her time working in an OBGYN office during COVID, everything changed. She witnessed firsthand how isolating it was for expectant mothers to attend ultrasounds alone. With tight schedules and a focus on diagnostic images, sonographers rarely had the luxury to slow down and simply let parents connect with their baby.
"The parents wanted to just pause and see their baby in awe. They wanted to just watch the wiggles. They wanted to see the baby’s face and see the baby kick. They wanted to feel a connection. I saw the need. I felt the need. One day at work I had a huge feeling come over me and I couldn’t ignore it. I felt like I was being pushed and led to open this business. I have no business experience. How will I manage a business and pay all the necessary bills without making a paycheck of my own to provide for my family? Many questions went through my mind, but my heart wouldn’t let me ignore this idea. I had never felt this overwhelming feeling before. Before the idea, I had come across certain people in my life that would later become connections to opening this business that I never knew would happen. One by one, doors opened and everything fell right into place. It was definitely a God thing, I just didn’t know it at the time. Now, three years into the business, I have learned so much. My love for ultrasound has grown even more. I have witnessed so much happiness and joy but also very sad times too. Just like in the clinical field, the good outweighs the bad, but it still doesn’t make the ‘bad’ any less. I have celebrated with parents and I have grieved. Every situation is different in its own way but my prayer is to continue to learn and be supportive of parents in any way that I can. I pray that I’m able to provide some sort of peace and good memories. I have to believe that my business is here for a reason and I’m hopeful that I will make a difference."
The Facility
Oh Baby has gone above and beyond in creating an inviting space for mom's and their families during their scans. There is a large couch where families can sit while they watch the scan on the big screen. For those that already know the gender of their babies, she even has fun LED lights around the TV to light up blue or pink!
Sneak Peek
At as early as 6 weeks, moms can come in for a blood test to find out the gender of their baby! With these tests, they are extremely sensitive to male DNA. To ensure an accurate test, Oh Baby has a sanitized room completely dedicated to women so that no test gets contaminated. Test results are sent to an email of your choice, whether yours or your keeper of the gender, as soon as 1-2 business days. When you book this service, you will also receive a discounted gender confirmation scan. Sneak Peek testing is over 99.9% accurate! To read more about the accuracy of this test, click here.
The Boutique
Ahhh my favorite part!!! (Until it comes time to actually paying at least because I could easily spend a full paycheck in one stop.) With brands like Paty, Magnolia Baby, and Baby Loren, there are plenty of options for the babies who like to be comfortable in a luxury Pima Cotton outfit. If you haven't heard of Pima Cotton, let this be your sign that YOU NEED IT! They also carry brands such as Magnetic Me, Emma Jean, Mudpie, and Jelly Beans. They don't stop there either! Bows from Beyond Creations, diaper bags from Freshly Picked, jewelry from Cherished Moments, and more.
From Clinics to Connection: Her Sonography Journey
After completing her college basics in 2008, she enrolled in a one-year advanced sonography program at the Institute of Ultrasound Diagnostics in Spanish Fort, Alabama. With a focus in general sonography, she became a registered ultrasound technologist in both Abdominal and OB/GYN sonography by 2009—and she’s kept those credentials current ever since.
Over the years, her career has spanned clinics, hospitals, and even the classroom. She’s taught post-secondary education in ultrasound and served as Clinical Director at the very school she trained at. While she enjoyed many aspects of her job—especially teaching abdominal anatomy—her true passion always remained in OB. In January 2022, that passion took shape in a whole new way when Oh Baby opened its doors.
One major motivation for starting her own business? Family. As a mom of three girls, she wanted the flexibility to show up for school events and still provide for her family.
“I work more now than I ever did as a clinical sonographer,” she said. “But if I need to block my schedule for my kids, I can. There’s a lot of sacrifice, and most of the money goes to overhead—but I’m learning and growing every day.”
Now, three years in, her love for ultrasound has only deepened. She’s been a part of joyful celebrations and heartbreaking moments alike, holding space for families through every stage.
“I have to believe my business is here for a reason,” she shared. “And I’m hopeful I can make a difference.”
